BUSY DAYS (5)

The fingers tiptoed on the waves of the obstinate sea,
the palm felt very much left out having to stay away from the water.

BUSY DAYS (4)

This idea of starting a book club with friends delights me. The ladies have already shown how keen they are. Lovely. Just then I even went so far as to start a fb group to celebrate it. :P

It'll be embarrassing now if we end up reading zero books.

BUSY DAYS (3)

3 May 9:34
Saturday night, first anxious and tired then calm and sleepy, phone calls x 3 +2.

Old friends are amazing. There's this best friend in my life I wanna talk about now. We were in the same class in an all-girl high school. I was constantly teasing her but she always put up with me for she got a good sense of humour.

We did not go to the same university afterward.

Then I went to study in the UK. She helped me out when I was miserable with my work there. In the meantime I missed all her concerts.

Then I came back years later. I lost track of her updates or wasn't paying enough attention. Our coffee times always got cut short for we took turns being too busy to relax. To make it up for me, she is always on the other end of the phone listening to me grumbling and moaning, somehow I always got loads to tell, loads of pointless raves and tedious rants.

I feel blessed and loved! :)

BUSY DAYS (2)

It was a bit of a long day, my exhausted body walked back itself, the tired brain of mine still thinking that on the way back my smileless face perhaps had affected the surrounding air.

At a moment like that, difficulties felt so pressing, and I was so stuck.

BUSY DAYS (1)

28 April 2009 at 00:30

Once upon a time I wrote a play entitled happy days part one for my creative writing class.

Now I'm so busy (and happy).

A rather interesting day. Rushed to places, here and there, to this end then back, then turn that way, to that other end, then back. Fast walker me. A dry day so I did not fall down in such a hurry.

Just when I was thinking I did something tolerably well, I got a response which did not go with my positivity. However, I was surprised how little time I spent licking my own non-existing wound from the negativity attack. Almost in no time I decided not to give in but to take the chance to work harder.

Then, tonight after teaching, a coworker came to wait outside my classroom. We walked to and took the MRT together. 3 hours class, plus 30+ minutes small talk, hmm.. Not that I did not enjoy chatting with coworkers. It was just that I thought with all my heart I prefer playing my iPod on the ride home. Having constantly thought about texting someone to grumble about it, I began to actually think I was being a bit silly. Then I threw all those rubbish thoughts away and switched off to energy saving mode.

After all, why all the random contemplation about other people!

Apparently I have more cool things to think about, like Henry V, like the Five Petals, like Faith Yang's new album, like my cute nephew etc etc... off with useless thoughts on how (a little) annoying other people sometimes can be when actually they were only being polite/lonely/whatever...

Happy 2008!

2008 is a pretty number. I like the shape of the four digits put together.

I just received an E-Card from my friend S. An interactive one:

'click a number'

to see what my new year's resolution is. I chose 8, and here it goes:

Just be a happy nut.

Heehee... It won't be a difficult one. :)

2007. Before and after my holiday in south Wales for Christmas I managed to meet up with several friends to exchange greetings and good wishes. Mulled-wine sessions started in early December! Also, thanks to two friends' birthday party invites. I have recently started feeling really warm at heart, and I think this is the right feeling for a properly happy person at this time of year, besides, I feel the peace deep in my heart too. Not gonna sound too profound, but I am a very lucky person, truly.

2007 is gone. I know this does not take away unsolved troubles, but I have finally realised that lingering around them does not make anything easier.

New Year's Eve. Doing the count-down outside York Minster was lovely. I would not have done this 3 years in a row if it were otherwise. Surrounding me was a lot of love and felicitation: couples kissing, big grins, hugs, loving gazes...

then we came home to play guitar and sang till we could not keep our eyes open any more...

2008 will be the year I leave this marvellous city, where I have piled up bitter sweet memories since 2003. It will be a year for some changes. I will think of the friendship with the really amazing people I met here.

A new start.
I am not afraid.

Self-righteousness

W mentioned 'lady fingers' once or twice at home, and the other night again when we were at a birthday dinner. M prepared Tiramisu.

W: Where did you get your lady fingers? The ones I bought were not soft!

M: These ones are from Italy actually! but I think you can get similar ones from TESCO.

They're not lady fingers, they're sponge fingers. And I thought to myself, I've told you they were called sponge fingers, lady finger is veg 秋葵 or okra.

W: Yes I got some from Somerfield but they were not soft.

Me: Because for Tiramisu M first dipped them in espresso and that was why they became soft!

M: Yes! And we use the plain side to dip so that the other sugary side could keep the liquid inside from leaking!

I was somehow still thinking about the names 'sponge finger' and 'lady finger' and the object.

Then yesterday I read parts of a book that S recommended. I read a couple of chapters very quickly online. There was a part about being self-righteous.

From that, I started to reconsider my behaviour. Was that a kind of self-righteousness? Why was I affected by how a thing was called by others?

Maybe I was not. Maybe I interpreted the situation as my advice not being taken and therefore got unnecessarily irritated. Why didn't she take some action to change after I corrected her mistake?

Obviously, that was self-righteousness.

Yet, to think again about it, she did not agree with me, but what was also involved was that I did not think she was right either. Why didn't I think she was right? Was I really so sure she could not be right?

So I checked dictionaries, and found that we were both right.

Like Haidt mentions, my time was spent in vain on unnecessary worries.

PS. An apology to W.

must be realistic

must switch off some channels in the head and withdraw expressions, listen to this man, think: work; facing the writing task, think: work, no, do not think, just write; look at his face, no, just his glasses, and do not think: 'spite', but think: work; be realistic, think about later later, no, do not think about it ever...

must be realistic

19.10.06

words words words

I want to remind myself that talking is talking to others. My brother said most of the time I just murmur to myself, and it's unhealthy, plus, it wastes energy without carrying out any sort of communication; it's the most dangerous to murmur to myself in my papers: I must rethink about my reader(s).

but why...

14.8.06

fear

the true-to-oneself sort of determination, awareness of how to tackle the tasks,
faith in us, the willingness to feel trusted and to trust,
an understanding of the situation
and a version of how to interpret what it is,
then overcome the fear, get in there confidently and get it done.
