Adagio

Sonata in D major, K.576 : II. Adagio (Mozart, 1789)

Because one of the keys all of a sudden decided to remain silent forever, I was forced to stop playing the songs I always played on this piano. My landlord said 'we need a new piano.' Then he told me actually this piano was found unwanted on the street. A homeless piano until it was moved in.

Most of its keys do not function properly. It needs tuning pretty badly too. I miss my own one at home. It's sitting in my room quietly waiting for my return.

P, my piano teacher last year, told me that 'one could always try to make the best of a piano, no matter how lousy its condition is.' Practising fingering, for instance. But I have to keep in mind not to take the sound seriously.

Dynamics, dynamics. Not just notes but singing phrases.

So I searched for tunes that don't require that one key. No more tunes in C Major for this piano. Lots of black keys from now on.

As a result I came across Mozart's sonata numbered 576. I dug out its recording from the collection L gave me. Starting from the second movement because I have a bad habit of preferring the second movement of his sonatas. I especially love the tempo note given to this movement: Adagio. At ease.

Just then I continuously practised one phrase in 6 bars. I went from reading the sheet while playing to watching my fingers dancing. Rarely so! The dance is not yet graceful, but is tolerable at this stage.

That broken key is actually quite an essential one, but I'm not letting its silence announce the death of this piano yet.
