Feelings are surely what make one feel human and are therefore critical to being 'alive'.
I have just watched 'Children of Men' thanks to your blog and really enjoyed it. Interestingly that film struck me as addressing the concept of being alive from another perspective of when there is no longer hope in the sense that the society is dying. What appeared to be left in that society was 'empty' people who seemed to have lost feelings towards one another.
