Knowing so little historical background, which really matters to me, I half understood the film, therefore don't feel comfortable to comment much... Enjoyed it tho, and was saddened.
Very interesting (positive) to me how a writer expresses gratitude. And I will remember the sound of it.
Have just quickly read about some interpretations of reasons for HGW to want to care and be kind. I understand some say he's in love, some say he's moved by art. I couldn't help but feeling sad. I use a personal tone to write this, which does not stand as an argument; I believe within the script's scope it wouldn't be convincing to just go 'some things happen for no reason.' But, couldn't kindness spring up just from a person who is good, at that very moment when he decides to be kind? Why think people are always so purposeful? We ask people why they're unkind, I guess we want to interfere with that. Why look for reasons to be kind? I rather think even HGW himself isn't so sure about the reason behind his behaviour, and this is very interesting to me. Not everything necessitates rationalisation.

I really really like that movie. At lot of time it just stroke my heart...
I personally think HGW made the decision simply because he envied their lives (hinted from the English name of the movie too). I agree with you that we probably shouldn't keep asking for the purpose. But most of the time, there is some kind of trigger/motive behind someone's acts, esp. those contradicts his/her normal behavior. Asking "why" doesn't negate the appreciate of the change. Asking "why" will a lot of time help us change as well.
HGW envied them not because they are artists, but because they are living in their dreams, they are defending their dreams, they are chasing their dreams with whatever needs to be done...Compared with his, I think HGW started questioning himself what he really believed in and what he really wanted.
I can't say enough how much I like the ending. It's a sad movie but it did give the audience the very positive view of our humanity.

hmm, i agree with you basically... the envious feeling can drive him to want to interfere with the couple's affairs, hoping things could remain the same.
